when a rock star or pop idol comes to town - you have hundreds who flock to them like faithful worshippers. But by far, their best worshippers, the ones who love them most, are those at the front lines, seeking to talk to them at every chance they can get, always thinking about them day and night - obsessed with being with them. They wouldn't think twice if they were asked by them to fetch some food or do whatever they ask, just in the hope of pleasing them and earning their love.
Their worst worshippers would be the ones who never even go to their concerts, who only mention them when they hear others talking about them (just to fit into the conversation). They may have a picture of them up on their wall but that is only to make them feel like they are a part of the "cool" crowd. If they were asked to do something that went against their desires, they would continually question it and ultimately refuse to do it. They have no love for them in their hearts and only follow them for show. In fact, they love themselves far more. They are their own idol of worship. They think about themselves most of the time. Talk to themselves. Look to their own selves for guidance. etc
Even though both types of worshippers have misplaced their love in false idols (be it other people or themselves), there is still something we can learn from the first type. Do we worship Allah swt with as much devotion and love as they love their idol?
Do we seek to be at the front lines when meeting our Lord in salah?
Do we talk to Allah swt every chance we can get?
Do we think about Him day and night - obsessed?
Do we do something He swt commands of us without thinking twice just to earn His pleasure?
Or are we more like the other type - na3udhu billahi min dhalik!
