Ingredients to grow an ego

1) Self-awareness (when you are aware of your thoughts, you start to notice certain patterns. In reality, these patterns come and go and easily change over time. However, a collection of patterns gives the illusion of a specific personality. Once we label this specific set of personality thought patterns, we tie them together as a single imaginary entity and the illusionary EGO is born)
2) Memory (if we remember these personality thought patterns and the label we have given it, then continually reaffirm it in our minds, the illusion slowly solidifies. Our thought patterns become rigid and unchanging.  Closed minded.  The EGO - an imaginary internal entity - became more real to us than the external entities we observe in the outside world.  We believe "we" are a specific, fixed personality, rather than a collection of thoughts with certain patterns appearing and disappearing as we learn new things)
